BREAKING NEWS: Biggest News In Africa Right Now -Ed 8 Update


Presenting a roundup of the biggest news across Africa this past week, catch last week’s biggest news edition 7, in case you missed it.

In this week’s edition #8;

1. Migrant Crisis update:

  • Migrants are now said to be heading towards Spain as an alternative route into Europe as Italy tightened its borders and confirms closure of ports all through the summer.

  • 100 more Migrants, including babies, feared dead as Dinghy boat capsizes off the coast of Libya. In the past few days, 200 migrantsin total are feared dead as the total number feared dead this year exceeds 1000. The high death rate is said to be the result of decreased rescue at sea missions as Malta and Italy increased clampdowns on rescue boats.
  • A new region to carry out rescue mission was expanded by Libya; previously no official rescue areas were said to be managed by Libya. This new region formalizes Libya’s responsibility to the rescue of Migrants instead of leaving it up to NGOs and Italians to rescue migrants stuck at sea. Meanwhile Italy gives more ships to Libya to carry out rescue missions and increase their rescue missions to prevent illegal immigration.
  • A rescue vessel has not been allowed to leave the Maltese port to carry out rescue mission and denied permission to operate in the area.
  • The Open Arms vessel with 60 more migrants from 14 different countries were allowed into Spain via Barcelona as Italy and Malta turned the rescue ship away (img below).

 




 

2. Sports roundup

  • FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his disappointment that no African teams made it to the next rounds as all African teams exited at first round of the world cup for the first time in 36 years, since 1982. He went on to say next World Cup should present another opportunity for the African teams (img below).

  • The talent drain has also been questioned as African players are seen to be thriving internationally leading to questions of the dedication of African governments and federations towards the sport and developing talent.
  • KFC South Africa released a hilarious advert trolling the Brazilian Footballer, Neymar’s rolls. Check out the video below, funniest advert ever.

  • Mo Salah signs a new 5-year deal with Liverpool lasting to 2023, after switching from Liverpool from Roma in 2017.

     




     

  • In a BBC interview, former Super Falcons striker Mercy Akide, talks about her dream of coaching the Nigeria’s women football team some day in the future.
  • Algerian Said Benrahma has been signed to Championship club Brentford from French football club Nice for an undisclosed fee.

3. Who is heading to the election polls in Africa?

  • Nigeria heads to the polls soon in 2019; calls were made for citizens to get their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) cards, however common complaint remains who will they vote for? Issues have come up with difficulties reported to acquire the voter’s card. Some branded voter’s card appeared online on Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce website.
  • Mali heads to the poll in July 29th, campaigns have kicked off amid tensions potential violence linked to al-Qaeda-linked jihadists.
  •  




     

  • Madagascar is scheduled to hold first round of presidential election in November, 2018, and second round in December 2018, according to the Prime Minister.
  • Despite controversy and blast over the last week, Zimbabwe heads to polls with barely 30 days to go, anticipation is high as it is the first election since the exist of Mugabe in 2017.
  • Algerians will head to the polls in April 2019 to elect a new president and is not without controversy.

 




 

4. As the Anglophone and Francophone tensions persist in Cameroon, Nigerian business people based in the Anglophone area are said to be fleeing the region due to fears over the persistent violence affecting business operations (img below).

5. Recently, an oil tanker exploded during rush hour in Lagos, Nigeria, death toll now 12 with the bodies recovered and many more feared dead due to 54 cars on fire. The State government is now making plans to prosecute the tanker owners. While the Nigerian authorities have now put a restriction on oil tanker movement with restricted times and routes.

6. Plateau State, Nigeria, Herdsmen and Villagers clash, with an estimated 200 dead in increasing land grab battle involving Herdsmen in the country. The country’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, has been criticized for not doing enough to manage the rising tensions. 19 people have been arrested so far while the British parliament debated the event and called on the President to do more to tackle the issue in the region.

 




 

7. Politics roundup:

  • Bill proposed to extend South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir’s tenure to 2021; the opposition has opposed this proposal.
  • Ethiopia was accused of torturing prisoners systematically in Ethiopia’s eastern Somali region. Five prison officials have been fired in attempts for the government to tackle the allegations and reform the sector.
  • Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia met in the past week to discuss potential tripartite developmental funds for projects.
  • South Sudan agreed to a potentially permanent ceasefire plan is in the works to be concluded to hopefully bring more peace and security to the region.

 




 
8. Duduzane Zuma, (pictured), son of former South African President was briefly detained while returning to South Africa to attend the funeral of his brother Vusi Zuma who died last week. The arrest was said to be linked to previous charges filed.

9. Tensions on the rise in the fragilely peaceful DR Congo East bordering Uganda as 11 people are reported dead with another 7 missing in ethnic attacks.

10. The artificial intelligence (AI) humanoid robot, Sophia had a scheduled dinner date with the Ethiopia PM but was forced to miss the dinner after apparently losing parts at German airport. She finally met with the Ethiopian PM wearing a traditional Ethiopian outfit (pictured) at Ethiopia’s ICT expo. She went on to say Ethiopia is a special country with world class talent 😊

11. Bananas are said to be on the verge of extinction due to the outbreak of a deadly tropical disease, Panama disease. Scientists are now in a race to find banana species that are resistant to the disease and a wild species of banana in Madagascar could save the day as they have been found without the Panama disease.

12. The African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced plans to invest $12bn in Nigeria’s energy sector and a host of other countries in the continent as part of its Energy for Africa

13. Celebrated Malian Spider-Man, Mamoudou Gassama, who gained French citizenship as well as new job with the city’s fire services for his heroic efforts saving a child a few weeks ago dangling from a balcony started his new job as firefighter in Paris. He also traveled back to Mali recently with a heroic welcome.

14. In the first ever of such events in Swaziland, now known as eSwatini, Africa’s last absolute monarchy held a LGBTI Pride event this past week and got world attention.

15. On Ebola watch, the DR Congo health officials completed Ebola surveillance, with no new cases reported, which is good news for the region.
