Entrepreneur Profile: Start-up Story of “The African Beach Roundie”

Discover the story of “The African Beach Roundie”, ethically handcrafted in Senegal by Pauline Emira SiM and Sofiane TOURE, French couple living between Montpellier, France and Dakar, Senegal. Also check out  the Beach Roundies to light up your summer 2019 beach fun.

  • In what year was your company created and what was your mission at the beginning?

Our company was created in 2017, initially we wanted to re-visit the Australian concept of the round beach towel with a challenge of 100% made in Africa. It took us a few trips to the mainland and nearly a year to get our very first prototype.

  • Who are the founders of the company? – Pauline Emira SiM and Sofiane Toure

We are a French thirties couple living between Montpellier and Dakar.

Me, professional real estate since 2007 … When I’m not on a construction site, I’m at the beach or the pool! Passionate about interior decoration and urban dances since my childhood, I come from a modest background and grew up tolerant within a social and cultural diversity.

Sofiane, was a web marketing assistant for a French start-up, Métis of Senegalese and Algerian origins. He is above all an addict sneaker, amateur photographer, passionate about street art and Californian culture.

  • How did you get the idea and name of your business?

It is the story of our life that gave the idea of this company or rather of this new concept. When a beach loveuse bathes in the African culture it gives: “the African Beach Roundie”.

Moona-Bi is a mix between the word “moon” in reference to the round shape of towels and the African name “mouna”, as for the ending “-bi” it is a wink to the Senegalese language: Wolof.

  • Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Sofiane yes, it was me who did not feel ready, it is finally the birth of our son in 2015, which has grown this desire for freedom and therefore the courage of entrepreneurship.

  • What is the best feature of your beach towels?

Without a doubt, the quality of the fabric we chose. Indeed, our challenge was to obtain a product 100% made in Africa. An ethics that is expensive but that we do not regret. We are working with the Uniwax plant in Ivory Coast (Vlisco group) to defend the authenticity of the loincloth and an Egyptian factory for our 100% cotton sponge.

  • What was your moment of pride so far in the company?

We think our greatest pride has been to be immediately spotted and exhibited in the most beautiful African concept stores in the world, from Dakar to Los Angeles, from Miami to Port Gentil and recently in Geneva …

  • What do you like most about business in Africa?

In Africa or rather in Senegal for our part, we are all more or less entrepreneurs and therefore we try to support each other. Here people are open and very affordable, so it’s easier to build a professional network and business ideas come together!

  • What are your biggest challenges today in the industry or in your industry?

Beach towels was an ethical challenge that allowed us to make a name for ourselves in Dakar while supporting Made in Africa. Many people suggest ideas for the next Moona-Bi … But our biggest challenge is to continue to bring new things that look like us and that come from our mix of culture.

  • What other countries do you plan to add retailers to for your business, with the United States, Senegal, and Gabon?

It seems obvious to us to find partners in Europe and in Ivory Coast for the resale of the African Beach Roundie but until now it was not easy to find the right transport solution for the international B2B by being on the African continent. Fortunately, we are not the only ones to have thought about this problem and new solutions are evolving from day to day from a logistic point of view.

  • What is the best part of being an entrepreneur?

The best part for us is without hesitation to have our total freedom. We took the risk of living from day to day for an exceptional adventure to 3 that we could never have had while staying in our comfort zone.

  • What kind of training did you need before starting your business?

Sofiane had a marketing and commercial training and I in real estate professions. These offered us some bases but we were not concretely trained to undertake. It is our curiosity and our desire to succeed which pushed us to seek our answers on the Internet, by following free trainings on Youtube, by adhering to Facebook groups and forums dedicated to the entrepreneurship or even in the dedicated salons to young entrepreneurs. In the end, we often thought that not everyone was fit for entrepreneurship. Do not stress, be afraid of tomorrow, or even failure. Regardless of the level of education, it is rather this ability.

English version here:

En effet, notre challenge était d’obtenir un produit 100% made in Africa.
