Presenting a roundup of the biggest news across Africa this past week, catch last week’s biggest news edition 11, in case you missed it.

1. Cameroon Conflict Updates:

  • 2. Migrant Crisis update:
  • While the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean is said to have dropped, the risks are said to have increased to about 1 in 18 deaths in 2018.
    • Thousands were said to have taken to the streets to demand the German Government take more migrants stranded at sea.

  • 3. Politics and Conflicts:
  • Prominent police officer, Muhammad Kirumira, shot dead with another lady in Uganda. The • Ugandan Popstar turned Politician, Bobi Wine, has spoken on the incident.

  • The Malian election where President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was sworn in for another 5-year term, saw some Islamist militant violence who violated the peace deal.

  • Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), with the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of both parties continuing to defect to opposing party.
  • Egypt delivered mass death sentences to 75 people due to their participation in the 2013 Rabaa Square protests. The UN has urged Egypt to overturn the sentences.

  • Rumors have come to light of potential plot by ANC, former President Zuma’s party to oust current South African President Ramaphosa. The ANC denies this.
  • Current Angolan President, João Lourenço, tightened his grip as leader of ruling party, People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), after the former president and leader of 38 years, José Eduardo dos Santos quit as party leader.

  • Burkina Faso has seen an increase in terrorist threats across various regions with bomb blast killing two soldiers, injuring several in the past few days.

  • The UN accuses Burundi, who recently withdrew from the ICC, of human right abuses.
    • Inspirational Credit Suisse Chief Executive, Tidjane Thiam, has denied claims he will seek Ivory Coast Presidency when they hold vote in 2020.

  • 4. Africa Sports:
  • Egypt beats Niger 6-0, in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with Mo Salah scoring 2 of the 6 winning goals.

  • Morocco beats Malawi 3-0 in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The other countries that won their games are Nigeria, Kenya.
    • At least 1 reported dead, with over 30 estimated injured, after stampede in Madagascar at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier with Senegal on Sunday 9th of September.

  • 5. Who is heading to the election polls in Africa
  • Cameroonian Elections are set to hold on 7th of October 2018; current president Paul Biya announced his intent to run in the election.
  • Nigeria heads to the polls soon in 2019; calls were made for citizens to get their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) cards, however common complaint remains who will they vote for? Issues have come up with difficulties reported to acquire the voter’s card. Some branded voter’s card appeared online on Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce website.
  • Madagascar is scheduled to hold first round of presidential election in November, 2018, and second round in December 2018, according to the Prime Minister.
  • Algerians will head to the polls in April 2019 to elect a new president and is not without controversy.

  • DR Congo heads to the polls in December 2018, submission of applications for presidency opens in DR Congo. Jean-Pierre Bemba, who had charges of war crimes recently dropped was rumoured to be a potential contender. However, the recommendation from the current ruling party is to declare Jean-Pierre Bemba ineligible as he was still convicted of witness tampering at the International Courts in Hague.

    • 9. A road crash in Tanzania leaves up to 13 people dead, including tourists.
    • 10. Dozens of elephants have died in Botswana with their tusks removed, linked to poachers breaching its borders.

    • 11. At least 6 reported dead after suicide bomber rocked Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, with an explosion in attempts to strike a government building, and causing a school nearby to collapse.

  • 12. On Ebola news, the beginning of August saw a spike in Ebola related cases to 100, however, the control measures in place seem to be working to eliminate the amount of reported case.
