From dismantling necklaces at home to selling products to clients in over 20 countries – Nhyira’s Collections have come a long way thanks to family, faith, and perseverance.
01. When was this business founded and by whom?
➤ Nhyira’s Collections is a Ghana-based company which deals in handcrafted accessories and souvenirs. It was founded in 2015 and was legally registered in 2018 by Nhyira Kwegyir-Addo.
02. How did the Idea for the business come about?
➤ I had an opportunity to work with a private insurance company, but I didn’t see myself growing there. I was hopeful that it would get better, but it didn’t. One Friday during my leisure time I was surfing the internet and I saw some handcrafted pieces which gave me a few ideas. I immediately purchased a few tools and materials in order to practice the ideas I got.
After several attempts a few came out really well. A few weeks after that I had a dream where I had dismantled a necklace I bought and was trying to rearrange it. When I woke up in the morning I immediately picked up the necklace I bought in town which I saw in the dream. I dismantled and rearranged it without struggle. While I was in the process of rearranging the necklace my little brother commented that I can do anything I set out to do.
I would say this in Fante (my language) another time. That comment alone was enough motivation for me and since then it’s been one inspiration after another. My husband and family give me so much support and encouragement. So I embrace them and work one day at a time.
03. Who are your biggest influences/inspirations?
➤ I would say my biggest inspiration is God. 80% of my designs have come through worship, dreams and nature, and also from my husband whom I don’t take for granted.
04. How do you market your business?
➤ We use social media to market all our products and about 30-50% of our customers come through referrals and word of mouth. We do our best by promoting unique and quality products which goes a long way.
05. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
➤ From my point of view I would say the top three skills needed are:
- An ability to take calculated risks
- Patience wrapped with perseverance
And most importantly learning to pick yourself up when you fall.
06. Which achievements are you most proud of?
➤ Considering where we are and how far we’ve come, we can proudly say our greatest achievements is being able to sell our products to people in over 20 countries, and also sponsoring the Miss Ghana USA pageants. Putting smiles on the faces of over 80 brides and counting is also an amazing achievement.
07. Do you have any formal training?
➤ I haven’t had any form of formal training in creating these products. It’s a God-given gift which I try to work out with my team when we have the opportunity.
08. What’s the feedback from your clients like?
➤ We’ve had great feedback from the majority of our clients. They encourage us and also put in special requests for products we haven’t made before. This motivates us and keeps us going. We always give our very best, no matter the situation we find ourselves in.
09. What advice would you share with someone who wants to start a business?
➤ Looking back on where I’ve come from, I would say the first advice is to pray about it, have patience, and keep learning. Whatever it is you want to do someone has likely already done it, so once you learn, you’re on the right path. Believing in yourself is very important and it will help you pick up the pieces when you fail. It’s also important to consistently trust the process because no career comes cheap. So you can only trust the process to be able to drive your way through defeats and failures.
10. What are the biggest challenges facing the business today, if any?
➤ Just one at the moment; online transactions can sometimes be quite difficult because of the absence of trust due to a lot of fraudulent activities online. But we have, and will continue to, put in lots of effort to create the brand on the foundation of honesty, humility and integrity. Through this process we have gained the trust of many.
