Pioneering brand Landlord by Makqash Ventures, is rendering the best customer services while producing quality handmade African fabrics Merchandise in this week’s business story celebrating with founder Michael Yaw Adom.

When was your business founded and who is the founder?

The name of the business is Makqash Ventures and the brand is LandLord. It was founded in 2015 by Michael Yaw Adom (Makqash).

## What kind of products do you offer/manufacture?

We offer merchandise or products ranging from fanny bags, custom shoes, jackets, backpacks, t-shirts etc. All beautifully handmade with quality and authentic African fabrics.


## Who or what inspired you to do what you’re doing now?

Well, nothing really inspired me. I’ve always wanted to do this from the beginning and here I am. But my late mother was a teacher and seamstress, so maybe she is the source.

## How did you make your first sale?

I started with just one product: the handmade shoes. I remember vividly how I used to walk around where I lived in East Legon, wearing a pair as a marketing strategy, and just hoping somebody would spot me and ask about them. Sometimes I walked under the scorching sun, hungry and tired and sweating all over. Yet nobody would look at what I’m wearing because obviously it wasn’t Nike or Adidas.

Long story short, one day I was at the mall and had to use the washroom. As soon as I got in there my phone fell from my hands. A gentleman who was also in the washroom thought it was his phone that dropped, so he looked down on the floor and spotted the shoes I had on. He said “hey, I thought it was my phone and by the way, where did you get those shoes from? “We make them sir” I answered. He asked if I could make a pair for his son. I said “yes sir!” and we exchanged contact information. The shoes were made and delivered after 4 days, and that was how I made my first sale.

## How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?

I do physical or face to face marketing a lot. I make sure to wear the brand almost everywhere I go and I also make good use of the internet.


## What would you like your customers to know about your service that they may not know today?

Rendering the best customer services plus producing quality handmade African fabrics Merchandise have always been our priority, and we intend to keep on growing in that regard.

## If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

We’re all on a journey in this life. Unfortunately, some people travel on the wrong road. If you are on the right road and you know it, all I can say is this; keep on keeping on, do the right thing, and be patient. The best things in life take time to happen.


## How do you find inspiration?

Inspiration is a great thing, as long as one is inspired to do what’s right. Because you can also be inspired to do the wrong things.

## Do you work locally or nationally?

We work locally and ship nationally and globally.


## What surprising lessons have you learned along the way?

Nothing for real. I mean, everything I go through or experience is something I had envisioned so nothing is really a surprise.


## What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

What moves the world for me is creativity and innovation. You have to be creative and innovative most of the time if you want to excel. And you have to be smart as well. Smart people don’t lose.

## What has been your proudest moment so far in the business?

When I first shipped a pair of LandLord shoes outside of Africa.


## What do you love most about doing business in Africa?

What I love about it is how easy it is and the less expensive labour cost.
