Handcrafted, natural, subtle. Nubia Naturals aims to do away with both harsh chemicals and harsh prices by lovingly sourcing and crafting quality yet affordable skincare products.

01. When was this business founded and by whom?

➤ The business was founded by accident in 2017 by Kinuthia. What started out as a quest to transition from chemical laden store bought products to more natural alternatives, and it turned into what is now known as Nubia.

02. Your products are handmade – who makes them? Do you employ local artisans?

➤ Yes, our slogan is Handcrafted. Natural. Subtle. As of now I’m a one woman factory, I handle the production process. The packaging and branding is outsourced and collaborated with the extremely talented Osborne Macharia and Isaac Kiunga of Lablife Studios. For our photography we work with Victor Ndalo.

03. What’s the most important/essential thing for you when creating a new product?

➤ Sustainable quality without compromising on affordability. The current cleansers in the market took a year of research to perfect. It was a whirlwind of excitement and fun, crazy moments, and moments of learning very hard lessons, but I’m 100% confident and so proud of the final product. It’s still a learning process but creating that strong foundation makes all the difference.

04. Are there any other brands out there, similar to yours, that you admire? Why?

➤ Goodness! Where do I start? There are so many African brands that I admire. They may not all necessarily be in the beauty industry but they all have a certain component that resonates with Nubia. For example Nuya Essence from Tanzania, YSWARA from South Africa, Lheritier from Kenya, to name just a few.

05. How do you use social media?

➤ Our company is online based. Our main selling platform is Instagram and we have just expanded into using Twitter. As an e-commerce company, we take advantage of the social media platforms to capture and engage with our clients.

We also employ social media as a tool to empower our clients. As a brand that is proudly African, we ensure that whoever comes to our social media platform leaves feeling proud of their melanin rich skin.

06. What habits/mindsets do you believe made the business successful?

➤ Prioritizing product quality and not compromising customer service. One of the things we strive for is to completely do away with the notion that locally crafted products are not of high quality. Our products are 100%made in Kenya, from branding to formulation to packaging, and at each step we never skimp on quality.

Nubia comes from a place of loving everything about being African. I think having that mindset alone greatly influences how we interact with our Nubians. We want them to feel like the Queens and Kings they are. We want to show Kenyans, Africans, and the world that we deserve quality because we are royalty.

  • Plant-based
  • Planet friendly
  • Vegan
  • Cruelty free
  • Not tested on animals

08. What do you love most about doing business in Africa?

➤ It’s such a joy to be able to source our oils and butters from different parts of Africa. On top of that, the creatives we have been able to work are extremely talented. Africa really is the birthplace of everything great.
