Accessories designer, Shikoonyango, tells us how she gets inspired to create because “Africans are stylish, not afraid to try new things, and there’s always room for creativity” in African fashion.
When was your business founded?
My business was founded in 2013.
## Who or what inspired you to do what you’re doing now?
My inspiration is my mum who’s always believed in me, and always told me that there’s nothing I can’t do. Also my husband, who supports and encourages me. He’s also a designer and when I see how far he’s come with his passion and how he’s never given up, I feel inspired.
## How do you advertise your business?
Through social media, word of mouth, and exhibitions.
## What tricks have you discovered to keep you focused and productive in your day-to-day business schedule?
Start early and keep a positive mindset.
## Are there any unexpected lessons you’ve learned along the way?
Mistakes are a way to learn.
## How do you define success?
For me, success is when I make a design and the response I get is positive. For me every design, every smile, every positive response, is a success.
## What do you love most about doing business in Africa?
We Africans are stylish. We’re unique, we’re bold, we’re not afraid to try new things, and there’s always room for creativity.
