Who Owns This Agent?

A simple agent ownership check for one AI agent, automation or scheduled workflow that can act after its original creator steps away.

Quick reminder

“It still works” is a performance statement, not an ownership model.

What this Guide helps with

Use it when agents have system credentials, schedules, system access or business responsibilities that may outlive the individual who created or configured them.

Keep it small

Pick one agent, not the full inventory, to practice this check.

The Pattern behind this Guide

Orphaned Agents: this public Pattern quiz leads into this Guide.

The check

Name the agent and purpose
What business task does it perform and for whom?
Name the current business owner
Who decides whether it should exist and what outcome it owns?
Name the technical and access owners
Who maintains it and who approves the systems/data it can reach?
List schedules and dependencies
Triggers, connected tools, credentials, queues, reports and downstream processes.
Run the stop test
What happens if the agent is paused tomorrow? Who notices, who acts, what fallback runs?
Set review / retirement conditions
Define when ownership, permissions, purpose and continued need are reviewed.

Use this small log

AgentPurposeCurrent ownerIf stopped
Weekly report agentBuilds operations packOperations analytics leadReport delayed; manual backup exists
CRM follow-up agentCreates tasks after meetingsSales opsNo clear fallback
Access-change agentRoutes role changesIdentity teamAccess requests queue

Where this commonly hides

Personal prototypesA useful experiment quietly becomes operational.
Shared service teamsSeveral people rely on an agent nobody officially owns.
CredentialsAgent access remains after the creator leaves.
SchedulesRecurring actions continue without a current business review.

Quick examples

What you seeQuestion to ask
Former employee still appears in setup notesWho owns the purpose now?
Nobody knows what happens if agent stopsWhat downstream dependency is invisible?
Agent still has broad accessWho approves and reviews those permissions?
Agent created “temporarily”What retires it?

The Satire

It appears 'employee offboarding’ policy only covers the humans.
