Can People Do the Work After Training?

A simple work-readiness check for testing whether people can perform one changed task after training without the project team carrying it.

Quick reminder

Training can finish before work-readiness arrives.

What this Guide helps with

Use it when training is complete but support requests, screenshots, repeat questions or old-process habits continue after launch.

Keep it small

Pick one changed task, don't audit the entire programme. Watch whether people can perform one real task from start to finish without the training team rescuing the moment.

The Pattern behind this Guide

Training Theater: this public Pattern post contains the quiz that leads into this Guide.

The check

Pick one real task
Choose a task people now have to perform: create a report, approve a request, update a record, use AI output, raise an order or close a case.
Define “can do”
Write the observable outcome: completed correctly, in the right system, with the right evidence and without hidden support.
Watch the first attempt
Ask someone to perform the task using the normal materials available after training.
List where they pause
Record confusion, missing context, unclear screens, unknown exceptions, missing authority or repeated questions.
Count the support needed
Note who helps, how often, how long it takes and whether the same help is required repeatedly.
Decide what must change
The answer may be better training, clearer operating rules, a simpler process, a support guide or a redesign of the task itself.

Use this small log

Where this commonly hides

AI toolsPeople learn where the button is, but not when to trust, edit or escalate the output.
ERP and CRMScreens were shown in training, but exceptions and daily judgement were not.
Workflow portalsUsers know how to submit a request but not how the downstream work behaves.
Policy changesPeople attended the briefing but cannot apply the rule to real cases.
Role changesThe job changed, but the training only explained the tool.

This is a lightweight Guide, not an organisational diagnosis or instruction to remove required controls. Some manual steps, approvals, training supports or handoffs exist for valid reasons. The useful question is whether the reason, owner and failure point are still clear.
