Guide: Future Value Assumption Map
When does this need to become real for the valuation or strategy to make sense? A 20-year dream priced like a 3-year certainty deserves a raised eyebrow.
Future Value Assumption Map
Use this when a valuation, strategy or roadmap depends on a future that sounds exciting but still needs a lot of things to become true.
Future value is not wrong, it just also needs a receipt trail.
Use this when
Use this when a business case, IPO story, AI roadmap, product strategy or transformation promise depends heavily on future customers, infrastructure, adoption or regulation.
The basic problem
Future value is not automatically hype because many hard things start as belief before proof. However, belief becomes dangerous when the assumptions stay hidden. This guide turns the future into a list of things that ideally should become true.
The pattern
A big future is usually an assumption stack where Customers must show up, Infrastructure must work, Costs must be controlled, Regulation must allow it and yes, Operators must run it. The map turns each layer from a vibe into a checkable condition.
The check
Write the claim in one sentence. If the sentence needs six commas, the claim is probably carrying too many futures at once.
What exists today? Revenue, users, working technology, signed customers, test results, infrastructure, operating capability or just an announced ambition?
What still has to be built? This may be product, infrastructure, governance, support, data, distribution, trust or regulatory permission.
What must work around it? Future value usually depends on many boring systems doing their job quietly.
When does this need to become real for the valuation or strategy to make sense? A 20-year dream priced like a 3-year certainty deserves a raised eyebrow.
Who actually has to run this when it stops being a slide? If there is no owner, the future is still mostly theatre.
What happens if this assumption is wrong? If the answer is “we will pivot,” write down what that costs.
What evidence would make you more confident? What evidence would make you less confident? If only positive evidence exists, it is not a map. It is a brochure.
What good looks like
A good assumption map does not kill ambition. It makes ambition legible enough to manage.
What to do next
Take the biggest future claim and split it into Current Proof, Missing Capability, Dependency, Owner and Evidence Trigger.
The Satire
A future that doesn't state its assumptions isn't a strategy, it's fan fiction for investors.
